To evaluatetheprotectiveeffectofliquoriceplantextract(LPE)onochratoxinA-induced nephrotoxicity,ratswereexposedtoochratoxinAfor28consecutivedays.Biochemicalanalyses showedthatochratoxinAelevatedtheserumlevelofcreatinine,bloodureanitrogen(BUN),alkaline
phosphatase(ALP),alanineaminotransaminase(ALT),andmalondialdehyde(MDA)whileantioxidant
power oftheserumwasdiminishedsignificantly(Po0.05). Histopathologicalexaminationsrevealed
degenerativesymptomsinproximaltubules,congestionsinrenaltissue,andaremarkableinfiltration
of theinflammatorycellsassignsofochratoxinAnephrotoxicity.Moreover,totalantioxidantpowerof
the serumandMDAgenerationwasincreased.Thetestcompoundsmelatonin(MLT)andLPEalleviated
mostofthebiochemicalalterations.Theresultsofthehistopathologicalinvestigationsofthekidneys
supportedthesefindingsconfirmingtheprotectiveeffectsofthetestcompoundsalbeitwithsome
differencesinantioxidantpotency.Takentogether,ourdatamaysuggestthatLPElikeMLTcould
alleviateanochratoxinA-reducedantioxidantpowerofserumandlowerthetoxin-inducedMDA
generation.HenceLPEmightbeconsideredasapracticallyantioxidantcompoundthatmaybe
beneficialinthepreventionandtreatmentofochratoxicosis.
